Frozen Shoulder

untitledIn June 2013 I was diagnosed with Frozen Shoulder. After months of not being able to move my arm all the way across my body or over my head and losing range of motion daily, I was thrilled at the thought of an ‘end in sight’. After all, when you go to the doctor and they determine the cause of your discomfort, there is usually a medication that can turn it around. Right?
So that same day, knowing it isn’t always effective, I received a cortisone shot straight into the joint cavity along with lidocaine to help you endure the trauma. I was also advised that I would probably need several months of physical therapy to help regain movement and range of motion.

The first week passed and there was no relief from the shot and the physical therapy was just beginning. For 6 months once a week I faithfully went and allowed my bursa capsule to be stretched and manipulated to break up some type of adhesion that was locking up my shoulder. The last time I went to physical therapy, the tech over extended my shoulder and I was in GREAT pain for two weeks and never returned.

What to do? Where do you go? Who knows anything about this? Will it ever resolve? As an Alternative Medicine student, I searched books, libraries, internet sites and picked the minds of my closest student friends. No answers, followed by frustration and concern because my life and responsibilities required the use of my arm.

The stress mounted and I purchased a massage therapy membership and went through several therapists who had no idea how to work my shoulder. It’s painful to get massage or even turn over with limited range of motion so every time was truly a journey.

Then it happened. I got an appointment with a therapist who had knowledge. She used a deep massage stripping the muscles underneath my armpit and along my minor pectorals. During the massage it was difficult to breath sometimes because the pain was intense but she helped me through. The next day, I could move my arm. Over the next 6 months, I went to see her several times a month and was definitely seeing improvement.

Today I am almost completely free of all symptoms and am continuing massage therapy to break free.

Somethings that helped nutritionally were my green drinks (kale, cucumber, cilantro, ginger, turmeric, celery, hibiscus, chia seeds, gogi berries, macaw and cacao), getting 8 hours of  sleep daily and reducing/eliminating alcohol and caffeine consumption and changing to a more vegetarian lifestyle to prevent/reduce inflammation inside my body.

I hope this information helps you or someone you know to recover from Frozen Shoulder. If you have any questions, please leave a comment or send an email. Namaste.

What are YOU waiting for?

Could this be you? It happens so fast we don’t even notice.

Over the last year and a half, I sat a desk and worked a traditional, albeit temporary,  9-5 job. You know that means that when I woke up the first thing I thought of was that job and my duties. It was all I did all day and with the exception of brief periods of time I applied my attention to my college studies, was the last thing I thought of before going to sleep. During the most hectic moments of my year and a half assignment, I even had times when work was in my dreams.

I did a fantastic job during this time and even maintained a GPA of 3.85. Can you imagine the stress? I didn’t even know it was happening, but it was. The stress was causing Cortisol to be retained in my Seratonin Receptors, which meant that I would gain weight. I drank lots of coffee and really built up my belly fat. In a year and a half, I could hardly recognize myself.

I saw a few photos of myself and thought, oh, it’s just the lighting. When I tried to get back into my uniforms to return to my flying job, I realized the camera had in fact told the truth and I had gained considerable weight. I had to buy larger uniforms.

I took myself down to the uniform store and asked for a size 12. That was the largest side I could imagine myself in and as ‘large’ as I was willing to try on.  I was sure that it would be too big, but give me some time to reduce myself into my smaller uniforms. Well, to my surprise, it was a struggle to get it on. I pulled, pushed and twisted myself into that dress. I made so much noise huffing and puffing, I was sure the attendant was going to come and check to see if I was alright.

I pulled back the curtain and perused my image in the dressing room mirror.  It was a much snugger fit than I thought it would be. Still in shock and telling myself that they had just made this one too small or possibly mislabeled it, I decided that I was taking it. Of course,  now I had to figure out how I was going to get it off since it was snuggly wrapped around my body like skin on a sausage. Well, you can imagine the grunting and groaning during the event….but FINALLY I was able to get it off.  I hurried to pay for my garment and leave before any depth of conversation could be had with the attendant.

Many people will say, ‘how did you let that happen?” Honestly, by the time I realized, it was too late. The deed had been done.

With my new uniforms in hand, I started back to work in my very active flying job and noticed a few pounds roll off …probably due to activity. Just think, ANY activity after NO activity is like a shock to your body. It wasn’t much though. Daily I was just undone about the problem.

A longtime friend reached out to me to tell me about her new journey as a Health Coach and I was intrigued, so much so that I started to use the tools she provided me. Those tools were her services as my Health Coach, providing guidance and support and lots of encouragement. Another tool was my involvement in a group of individuals on the program that share my same concerns and fears. They were also there to share my joys and accomplishments. The third tool was the food that I am using to relieve myself of the unwanted pounds and fat. It’s a unique program that is low fat, low glycemic index and encourages fat burning and helps to maintain lean muscle mass. Not much exercise required.

Within 6 weeks, I had lost 15 pounds! At the end of the second month, I joined the team as a Health and Wellness Coach and am continuing to lose weight. I was impressed with the product and the concept and want to help others in similar situations to feel better about themselves.

If you would be one of those people, please reach out to me. It’s possible that your camera isn’t lying….if it’s not, don’t worry…there is a way back…quick, easy and painfree………EMAIL ME at skweeek@gmail.com SUBJECT: Goals
